Phosphatidylserine:
In 1988, Life Extension published an article about studies in Europe showing phosphatidylserine could slow and reverse the rate of brain cell aging in laboratory animals. Phosphatidylserine restored mental function in older animals to levels exceeding those found in some younger animals. Studies in humans with Alzheimer's disease also produced significant improvements in cognitive function. In patients with mild dementia, significant cognitive and behavioral enhancing effects were observed. In one study with mildly demented elderly patients, the improvement in neural function continued 30 days after discontinuing phosphatidylserine (PS) therapy.

DMAE Bitartrate:
Increase mental performance in children and adults; beneficial for treating ADD; and elevates mood. MDs are dispensing dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) to treat America's silent epidemic: Attention Deficit Disorder. Studies show that DMAE can elevate mood and promote more restful sleep, as well as help increase mental focus, clarity of thought and muscle tone. DMAE occurs naturally in the body. It may be useful in slowing lipofuscion (aging spots) both on the skin and in the brain. In clinical studies, DMAE supplementation has shown great success in the treatment of learning disorders in children. It is also very effective in enhancing mental performance in adults. The secret is DMAE's ability to promote the formation of acetylcholine, an important brain neurotransmitter. DMAE and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) are the breakdown products of the Romanian youth drug, Gerovital. A 1/8 teaspoon supplies 180 mg from DMAE bitartrate. Inositol:
Inositol is necessary for the formation of lecithin and functions closely with a B complex vitamin, Choline. Since it is not essential in the human diet, it cannot be considered a vitamin. Inositol is a fundamental ingredient of cell membranes and is necessary for proper function of nerves, brain, and muscles in the body. Inositol works in conjunction with folacin, Vitamins B-6 and B-12, choline, betaine, and methionine to prevent the accumulation of fats in the liver. It exists as the fiber component phytic acid, which has been investigated for its anti-cancer properties.

Ginkgo Biloba:
Recently, western researchers have been studying Ginkgo Biloba as a treatment for senility, hardening of the arteries, and as a treatment for oxygen deprivation. More than 34 human studies on Ginkgo have been published since 1975, showing, among other things, that Ginkgo can increases the body's production of the universal energy molecule adenosine triphosphate, commonly called ATP. This activity has been shown to boost the brains energy metabolism of glucose and increase electrical Ginkgo has been used to increase the quality of blood flow to the brain to improve memory. Especially helpful for memory loss due to stroke, thus it is also helpful in the prevention of stroke. The herb also benefits arteries in the legs and extremities helping relieve pain due to poor circulation.

Vinpocetine:
Vinpocetine is an extract of Vinca minor, also known as the periwinkle plant. A derivative of the alkaloid vincamine, vinpocetine is used around the world (in about 35 countries) in the treatment of stroke and vascular dementia – where it is used clinically to enhance blood flow to specific regions of the brain as well as to reduce damage from free radicals. In Europe, a Hungarian company (Gedeon Richter) markets vinpocetine as a drug (Cavinton) for the treatment of various cerebral insufficiency conditions and as the “only drug” that improves cerebral metabolism (glucose and oxygen uptake), increases ATP concentration, and selectively increases blood flow to the brain (without lowering blood flow to other parts of the body).

Acetyl L-Carnitine:
Acetyl-L carnitine is an amazing nutrient. There have been previous clinical trials showing that this nutrient actually can improve memory and cognitive functioning in patients experiencing dementia. In a recent study last year, patients with Alzheimer's disease undergoing standard drug therapy were also given acetyl-L carnitine (ALCAR) at 2 grams a day. It was found that those patients treated with the addition of ALCAR had an improved level of responsiveness. Acetyl-L carnitine, coupled with alpha lipoic acid, has been shown in animal studies to actually regenerate brain cells and improve maze performance. It appears that acetyl-L carnitine is a key nutrient for energy production at the cellular level. Many scientists believe that as we age our cells die because our mitochondria fail to produce adequate energy molecules.

Alpha Lipoic Acid:
Alpha lipoic acid is involved in energy production. Lipoic acid works together with vitamin E and vitamin C to protect the entire cell from oxidative stress. As an antioxidant it is a very small molecule that is efficiently absorbed and easily crosses cell membranes. Alpha Lipoic acid is both fat and water soluble, so it can quench free radicals both inside and outside the cell. It also directly recycles vitamins C and glutathione and indirectly recycles vitamin E.

Alpha lipoic acid is an approved drug in Germany for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy (nerve disease). Several double-blind studies have shown Lipoic acid supplementation (300 to 600 mg daily) does improve diabetic neuropathy. Lipoic acid’s primary effect in improving diabetic neuropathy is thought to be the result of its antioxidant effects. However, it has also been shown to lead to an improvement in blood sugar metabolism, improves blood flow to peripheral nerves, and actually stimulates the regeneration of nerve fibers. Its ability to improve blood sugar metabolism is a result of its effects on glucose metabolism and an ability to increase insulin sensitivity.
