Volume 11, Issue 2                                                                                                                  February, 2000

NEXT CLUB MEETING: Wednesday,

February 23, 2000 at HeliPort Hobbies, 7:30 p.m.

From the President

Hello again fellow members, time keeps flying by fast. Our Jan. meeting was my first time behind the table. Thank heavens for the table because it gives me a chance to get away fast if I need to exit in a hurry! Just kidding! I thought the meeting went very well for the new officer's first time. There was alot of areas touched by discussion for direction regarding the club. We are going to have a car club join us at the field. The Lamar Stein team is still being assembled. The club roster now has a member limit.

It was approved by the members to allow the use of the property for running RC cars. The area in mention will be up on the hill behind the parking lot and the rest rooms. Right now we are only looking at about 5 to 8 drivers. We will be getting a full proposal at the Feb. meeting on all the details, dues, track layout, rules and working with M.A.S. If you have any questions on this let me or someone know so they can be addressed at the monthly meeting.

The Lamar Stein is still being assembled as to who, what, when and how. Right now we have four volunteers, Gary Hodges, Tony and Judy Tunis. Gordy Seth has offered to run the concessions again, THANK YOU!  We need more help so please if there is anything anyone can do to help no matter how small, it will be greatly appreciated. If no will chair this event I will try to. My problem is I can't make alot of daytime calls or visits during daytime hours. At this time we are looking at setting a date. We will try to have a three day event with AMA class C restrictions for big bird rules, 80" wingspan for mono plane and 60" for bi plane. Any ideas please speak up. More details will be set at the Feb. meeting.

The roster has a cap of 100 members now. This show's how the membership feels on keeping our close family style club intact. Some reasons of this were, if the field gets too crowded by high membership, the field itself would have to be expanded, mainly the pit area. On Sundays most tables are full now, especially if I bring out my big plane. The amount of your own flying time would be reduced to. Since this change has been made it will bring on changes of it's own. When and if we do get to the 100 member cap the renewal of your membership being on time is more critical. Now if you're not paid before March 1, you will pay a $10.00 late fee. When membership reaches the limit then if you are not paid by March 1, you will be dropped from the membership and put on the waiting list. OUCH!

I want to say thanks to everyone that has paid for renewal already. Remember that March 1 is coming fast so those of you who have not paid yet avoid the $10.00 late fee and lockout from the field.

Everyone that has paid and not received the new card along with new member's name tags they will be on the board at the field unless you send in a S.A.S.E  or come to the Feb. meeting. We have a few new members and I will get all the information on them and have it the next newsletter.

FLY SAFE , HAVE FUN AND DON'T CRASH!

Scott

Board Meeting Notes

January 26, 2000

The meeting centered on issues that were likely to come up during the general meeting. These issues came from discussions with club members. On all issues, nothing was resolved until the general was held.

·        The club’s website is no longer functioning. The member that was running is finished with school so he no longer has a place to host the site.

·        Members have been talking about passing a motion that would limit the numbers of members the club can have. This came up because of the impending flying site losses of both Arvada and Mile High. With the amount of people those club’s have, even a fraction could take over MAS by just joining. Warren suggested that instead of putting a cap on the number of members, we could require that new members have a sponsor from within MAS to stand for the new member. The membership (or some sub group) would then vote to see if the new prospect could join. Earl mentioned that this issue comes up every so often and the anticipated flood of new members never materializes. This is likely to due geography; people will find a club near where they live. The people who live in this area already are in MAS.

·        An older member asked Scott if it was possible to remain a club member but not be required to do the work bond because of health issues. The member is not an active flyer.

·        Lamar Steen. Ron and Earl went to the Chapter 90 meeting in January to see if there was any interest in the Lamar Steen. Chapter 90 members said that they didn’t come in 1999 because August was very full for them and by Labor Day they were burnt out. They suggested we close the field ½ day for them. The board thought this was odd since last year they were complaining that we didn’t close the field for 3 days!

·        Larry Stoughton asked Scott about the possibility of constructing a RC car track at the MAS field site. The track would be in the area west of the swing sets. Larry’s son Jason and his friends have access to a Bobcat that could be used to construct the track. The board liked the idea as a way to attract youngsters to our hobby. These issues were discussed at the general meeting in depth.

MAS Club Meeting Notes

January 26, 2000

First off Scott introduced the new club officers. Scott Hubbard, President, Ron Martin, Vice President/Treasurer, Tom Glaess, Secretary.

Ron told the membership of the current state of the club finances. They are:

Savings:            $634.41

Regular:            $1007.22

Runway:           $2945.55

Scott wanted to make sure that every member understands the work bond. Each member is required to work two MAS events during the years. These events include work parties at the field or working during a MAS public event (Lamar Steen, swap meet, etc.) Failure to work two events will cost the member $10 per event missed. So, if you don’t do anything during the year, you will owe the club $20 for not completing your two events.

Scott went over what the board discussed regarding the Lamar Steen. (see Board meeting notes). He then asked the membership for their opinions and for further suggestions for making the event a success. The membership suggested that the vent be a fun-fly and not just an IMAA event. Scott asked for someone to head-up the event this year. Charlie did it last year, but he wasn’t present at this meeting. Many members volunteered to assist with the event if Charlie was in charge. It’s not clear what will happen if Charlie doesn’t want to do it. Scott asked all members to try and come up with ideas for how to make the event a success. Last year there were more MAS members working the vent than were flyers!

Scott mentioned that he’s seen street signs appearing near the flying site. This of course means that developers are in the area. The membership thought that we were safe because the land we are on is School Trust land and therefore can’t be sold to developers. This needs to be investigated

The next subject discussed was limiting the membership. Scott discussed with the membership the reasons for even thinking of limiting the number of members. (see Board meeting notes). The membership was quick to suggest a cap of 100 members with a window of 20 for family of current members or brand new pilots. The idea of requiring a current MAS member to sponsor the prospective new member (instead of installing a cap) was brought up to the membership but was rejected. The members voice fears of being taken over by massive number of pilots in the Arvada club. Judy suggested that a cap might already be in the by-laws. A few members remember this cap, but agree that it is no longer in the by-laws. At this point, a motion was brought up for vote; cap the number of members at 100 with provision for 20 more family members or brand new pilots. The motion carried overwhelmingly.

At this point the discussion moved to the RC car track brought up at the board meeting (see board meeting notes). The membership said that the car people must only use surface radios so they don’t interfere with ours. The largest discussion centered on safety. Would people be safe in that area from bad pilots and/or out of control planes. Would the AMA even allow us to do it for safety reasons? Would it be within the terms of our lease with the county? Both of these issues need to be investigated. Barring a check on these two issues, a motion to allow the construction of the track was made. The motion was passed easily. Even after the motion had passed, the safety discussions continued. Since the car people are likely to not have any aircraft experience, it was suggested that they post a look out. This person could warn the others if an aircraft was on a collision course. A motion was made to write something in the deal as an out for MAS in case problems exist in the future. This motion was passed.

A few members mentioned that they’ve seen some visitors at the site that are helping MAS members learn how to fly. This is not a problem until the visitor flies on his own. They are not allowed to fly on our field. MAS members should tell them to leave or pay the dues and runway fee.

Scott brought up the idea of closing the field for an hour on a Sunday and holding the regular club meeting then. The idea is get more people involved in the meetings and since they are already at the field, why not have a meeting. It was noted that as President, Scott has authority to just do this. He doesn’t have to ask the membership. Scott however, did not like just making the decision. He wants to hear from the members. Those present said it was a good idea and to just do it some time. No date was set.

The Swap meet is set for June 10th. The hall is rented and the AMA knows about it. Warren is in charge again this year, and he asks members for ideas on how to advertise the event. Judy and Tony Tunis volunteered to help. Flyers need to start being distributed now so the word can get out. Members suggested emailing the flyers to other clubs so their members will hear directly. Dan Listul find the necessary email addresses. Warren asked the club for postage money to mail the flyers. The membership granted this request.

Scott brought up the older member who asked about getting out of the work bond. The membership said that if he wishes to remain a member, he must do the work bond. If he is out of state, then it he is exempt from the work bond.

Members will be dropped if they do not pay their dues by the end of February!! That is the end of the grace period and those not paying by then will no longer be members of the club. When the 100 member cap is in place, a new member may join when an existing member does not meet the dues deadline. The existing member will go to the end of the waiting list to join the club. If the cap is not in place (the current membership is not 100) then a late fee will be added to the existing member’s dues for paying past the end of February.

Scott mentioned to the membership that our web site is dead (see board meeting notes). The membership agreed that we need a new website. Scott’s ISP will allow him up to 5Mb of space for a web site. Warren also volunteered his account. Tom will get with Scott to see what it takes to get a website going with his ISP.

Dan Listul suggested that the club officers be exempt from the work bond since they work every month. A motion was made and passed to this effect.

Scott mentioned that on his travels, he’s seen a flying site where the stands for the planes are built right into the tables at the field. This allows pilots to easily work on planes as well as start them and run them from the stands. He asked the membership if he could try to construct an example at the field. No problem.

Roster

Thank you for everyone who called, E-Mailed or otherwise contacted me within the last month.  You can see the list is a whole lot shorter than it was last month.

We're down to 5 people with whom we need to speak in order to bring our records up to date.  If your name is on this list, please contact me at 303 690 9178, or E-Mail me at rcflyertoo@home.com.  If you don't want your phone number, address, or anything else published, that's fine, but we have to get our club records up to date.  If all this information is correct, please contact me to tell me so.  If any of the items in this list is empty, please call me with the information so I can fill in the blanks.  In particular, in addition to your name, we have to have a current address and your AMA number on file.  This is to satisfy AMA charter requirements for our club.  If you have E-Mail, we'll get the newsletter to you electronically if you like.

I'm gonna keep nagging every month until this table is complete, so you might as well call me today so I can take your name off this list.

Does anybody in the club know Joseph Woods?  I don't have a good address on him.  If he is still a member of the club, we need to get some data on him.  Right now, he's not getting the newsletter because I don’t have a place to send it.

Please, if you know any of these people, help me get in touch with them so I can straighten this out.

Also, I still need to hear from Chris Heim and Joe Fielding to confirm their address, phone number, AMA number, etd.

Thank you.
