NOW Foods Flax, Grains, and Rice Category

Flax seed has been part of a human diet for centuries. Ancient records indicate that before 5,000 BC, Egyptians carried flaxseed in their medicine bags. Later in history, Hippocrates wrote about using flax for the relief of abdominal pains, and in 8th century France, the King considered flax so important for the health of his subjects that he passed laws and regulations requiring its consumption. Therefore, it appears that flax has been part of a healthy diet for many centuries. However, it was not until this century that we have really researched why flax is so nutritionally valuable to us. A major nutritional factor of flax is the high content of alpha linolenic acid (ALA), meaning that flax is a great seed source of omega-3 fatty acids. ALA on its own may be helpful in the fight against cholesterol levels, cancer, and immune dysfunctions. However, ALA is an essential fatty acid that can be converted in the body to EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA have been associated in research with improved heart, brain and immune health. The Grain Foods Foundation has launched a multi-million dollar campaign to educate consumers in New York and Washington, DC on the nutritional benefits of bread and other grain products.
