Echinacea was the remedy of the Native American Indians from the Plains for
wounds, infections, and insect and snake bites. The purple coneflower is a
member of the sunflower family. The three most common species are Echinacea
angustifolia, E. purpurea, and E. pallida In the United States, the roots of E.
angustfolia have been used traditionally. Europe has performed more studies with
fresh plant extract of E. purpurea.
Echinacea has been used to boost the immune system, to help speed wound
healing, to reduce inflammations, and to treat colds, flus, and infections. Many
of the active components of echinacea have antibacterial, antiviral, and
anti-fungal properties. Echinacea has also been used externally to cleanse and
heal wounds, eczema, burns, psoriasis, herpes, vaginitis, canker sores,
