The Native Indians used Saw Palmetto berries for nocturia, enuresis,
impotence, atrophy of the testes, inflammation of the prostate, low libido in
men, infertility, painful periods, and problems with lactation for women. Saw
Palmetto has other traditional uses such as tonic and expectorant for mucous
membranes such as the bronchial tubes.
Saw palmetto is as effective as drugs for BPH, but lacks the side effects.
BPH is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate, a walnut-sized gland that
surrounds the base of a man's bladder and produces a component of seminal fluid.
After middle-age, the prostate begins to swell in about 50 percent of men. An
enlarged prostate prevents a free flow of urine, leading to frustratingly
