Agaricus blazei is a relatively new addition to the family of
medicinal mushrooms with research beginning in the 1980's. This species contains
a unique beta 1-6 linkage and has an extensive history of use as a folk remedy
in the areas of Brazil where it was originally discovered. Research has also
shown that Agaricus blazei contains more beta glucans than any of the
other medicinal mushrooms tested so far. The in-vitro research and animal
studies both show significant immune stimulating properties. The human
immune system, comprised mainly of tissues and cells defends the body against
diseases. More specifically, Natural Killer cells or NK cells play a critical
role in neutralizing outside organisms that enter the body.
In 1995, Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum, Ph.D., from King Drew Medical Center of UCLA,
found that the Agaricus mushroom increases the total number of all immune cells
within the body. In addition, he discovered that the Agaricus not only increased
the number of NK cells, but also made each individual NK cell more powerful.
The Agaricus blazei mushroom, has been found to have a positive effect
in strengthening and increasing Natural Killer cells in in vitro studies.
Research has been done on water soluble and alcohol soluble fractions of the
polysaccharides, all of which were isolated through a hot water or hot
water/alcohol extraction process. As with the other medicinal mushrooms, the
primary active compounds in Agaricus blazei, the polysaccharides, are
internal structural components of the indigestible cell walls. Extraction with a
heated aqueous solution is required to release these active compounds into a
bio-available form.
