Saw Palmetto Extract
Saw Palmetto is as effective as drugs for BPH, but lacks the side effects.
BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the base of a man's bladder and produces a component of seminal fluid. After middle-age, the prostate begins to swell in about 50 percent of men. An enlarged prostate prevents a free flow of urine, leading to frustratingly frequent urges to urinate, and can mask early signs of prostate cancer.
BPH affects up to 4.5 million U.S. men over 60 each year, and most drug-based treatments are acknowledged to be unsatisfying. Drugs, chiefly Proscar (finasteride), are successful for no more than half of those who take them, and can cause dizziness, fatigue and reduced sexual functioning. Surgery also carries risks of both impotence and incontinence, and new non-surgical options using radio waves and microwaves are available in only a few cities, including Atlanta. |
